The Department would like to congratulate Mark Shtanov (RIBA Part 2 – MPhil in Architecture and Urban Design) for receiving a commendation in the 2018 RIBA President's Awards dissertation category

Mark Shtanov's thesis is entitled Another Hotel in Africa: A New Prototype for a Community-Initiated, Phased West African Hotel Project with Attached Hospitality School, in Lekki, Nigeria. He writes "my thesis investigates how a village community, based in a developing part of Lagos State, Nigeria, can become economically self – sufficient through an architectural intervention in a form of a new hotel prototype, open for participatory entrepreneurship and mutually beneficial relationships between the local and the global. The study revolves around findings about West Africa’s hotels and its newly generated urban environments, made during fieldwork in Nigeria and Ghana".
