The project started with a detailed study of Latin American cities which led to the publication of an edited volume entitled "Rethinking the Informal City: Critical Perspectives from Latin America" (Berghahn Book 2009).
This book examines, from an academic perspective, current reactions towards urban informality and the strategies that are being implemented in order to tackle the challenges posed by the existence of urban informality in rapidly growing cities.
The project is now in its second stage, the purpose of which is to develop the material compiled and the theories produced during several years of academic collaboration into a series of strategies useful to intervene in the convoluted context of Latin American cities. We are also exploring the nature and development of informal settlements in other parts of the world, including North Africa and the Caribbean.
