Patrick Keiller announcement

Patrick Keiller succeeds Richard Sennett as the distinguished Visiting Professor.

François Penz, Head of the Department of Architecture from October 2017, writes:

Patrick Keiller is an eminent filmmaker, writer, artist and exhibition curator with an international reputation. He originally trained as an architect at the Bartlett (UCL), and was later a lecturer in architecture and fine art; he has also held research positions, most recently at the Royal College of Art (2007-10, The Future of Landscape and the Moving Image; 2002-05, The City of the Future) – resulting in films, exhibitions, as well as numerous publication and books.

Patrick plans to use his residence in Cambridge to progress a project researching the UK’s recent development and possible futures, studying its urban and rural landscapes and considering – among other things – novel forms of settlement that may be of relevance to Cambridge. This research will form the basis of his departmental seminars and public lecture – and will hopefully contribute to a future film or publication. Patrick needs little introduction but for those less familiar with his work, please explore these links related to some past projects:

Professor Keiller gave an introductory lecture in the Department on 25 October entitled Film as Spatial Critique. In this lecture, he described his earliest project and demonstrated how its experiential aspect has continued to motivate his more recent and current work.
