Former student Emily Penn, co-founder of eXXpedition, has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year's Honours List

Emily was a student in the Department from 2005-2008. Since graduating Emily co-founded eXXpedition, "a series of pioneering all-female sailing voyages to raise awareness of, and solutions for, the devastating environmental and health impacts of single-use plastic and toxics in the world’s oceans".

During her time as a skipper Emily has raised awareness of environmental issues all over the planet. She is a renowned public speaker on the international stage and advises on issues relating to the oceans and the future of society.
