Biography

Jhono Bennett, co-founder of 1to1 – Agency of Engagement, a design-led social enterprise based in Johannesburg, initiated the organization in 2010 to support the multi-scalar redevelopment efforts in post-Apartheid South African cities, addressing systemic spatial inequality.

In addition to his role at 1to1, Jhono teaches in various city and design programs at UCL and UAL. Simultaneously, he is enrolled at the Bartlett School of Architecture as a doctoral candidate in the TACK / Communities of Tacit Knowledge: Architecture and its Ways of Knowing network. His practice-led research revolves around inclusive design approaches, spatial justice, critical positionality, and urban planning in South African cities.

Jhono's work with 1to1, combined with his teaching and research at the Faculty of Design, Art, and Architecture (FADA) at the University of Johannesburg, has afforded him opportunities to collaborate with South African government departments, local and international research institutes, and universities worldwide, including Harvard’s GSD (USA), CEPT’s Faculty of Architecture (India), and the Urban Design program at the University of Sheffield (UK).
