The Department would like to congratulate Martha Minton, a final-year MArch student, on the completion of ‘The Stack,’ a pavilion at Jesus College.
Martha led the design and build of the pavilion, which is constructed wholly from reclaimed or surplus materials sourced by the Maintenance Department at the College.
The Stack serves as a test run for Martha's ongoing research and design work, which critically interrogates pavilions within the context of World Expositions, and the potential to repurpose abandoned exposition sites using earthenware interventions. The benches, made from reclaimed ceramic chimney pots—a nod to Sevillian traditions of clay craftsmanship—testify to the The Stack’s role as a 1:1 scale experiment and embodiment of Martha's ongoing research on Isla de la Cartuja in Seville.
From the Maintenance Department at Jesus College, for their dedication, optimism, humour, and outstanding craftsmanship, special thanks are due to:
- Paul McKenna
- Richard Secker
- Neville Ames
- James Irwin (Geordie)
And, for giving their time to help build the pavilion, thanks are also due to students:
- Ema Ziya
- Elen Jones
- Alex Bramley
- Aden Kumary
- Darcey Chadwick
- Jagoda Zuk
Finally, thanks are due to The Master of Jesus College, Sonita Alleyne.
