Abstract

RHP’s new Passivhaus certified accommodation for Lucy Cavendish College is the first fully certified mixed-use building for a Cambridge College. Winner of the AJ Architecture Awards 2023 Higher Education category, the project, set in the West Cambridge Conservation area, balances low energy design with historic context, creating a new spatial organisation to address inclusive design and wellbeing. The first year of in-use data reveals the building is living up to its stringent low energy targets and high user comfort. How was this achieved? What lessons and we learn? How did the simple art of conversation help the project to go ahead? This is the story of an architectural project from conception to completion and beyond.
