Abstract:

The principle of sustainability is inherent in the conservation of our built heritage. After all, building conservation is concerned with the preservation, repair and reuse of historic buildings. Pre-industrial buildings that have been handed down to us through the centuries were often constructed with materials that can easily be repaired, ensuring their longevity (if kept in an appropriate use). Nevertheless, different, non-compatible concepts of sustainability can also pose a challenge to those concerned with conserving our architectural heritage, and can even pose a threat to old buildings. This talk aims to reflect on the principle of sustainability within the context of building conservation, and highlight some of the opportunities and challenges involved.
