The prize-winning design, Appleby Blue Almshouse, is a project that brings joy to its inhabitants and sets new standards for older people’s housing. Located on the site of a former care home in Bermondsey (South London), the project consciously updates the traditional “almshouse” typology — typically small cottages around a courtyard for older people — by embedding it in a denser, urban context with high‑quality materials and generous shared spaces.
The judging panel described the building as “a provision of pure delight” that created "high‑quality spaces that are generous and thoughtful, blending function and community".
