Biography

Dr Barnali Ghosh is a Ground Engineering Technical Director at Mott MacDonald (London) and a Fellow at the Institute of Civil Engineers (FICE) and the first female recipient of the John Mitchell award for excellence in Geotechnical Engineering in 2023. She is a chartered civil engineer with a specialisation in earthquake geotechnical engineering, as demonstrated by her PhD at Cambridge University. She was recently selected as one of the top 50 women in engineering in the UK in 2020. Throughout her career, she has served as a seismic designer and reviewer for high-profile projects worldwide. Her extensive practical experience comes from working in various capacities within the industry. Her specialisation includes applying academic research to practical problems and spearheading state-of-the-art numerical solutions to address practical design challenges. She remains connected to the academic world as a visiting Honorary Professor at Cambridge University through the Royal Academy Visiting Professor scheme.  She has recently taken the role of visiting Professor at the Architecture department.
