About
Amabel Richardson is the Fabrication Technician at the Department of Architecture, University of Cambridge. Her experience lies across Architectural model making and teaching sectors.
In her role, Amabel provides fabrication support to students across machineries including laser cutters, 3D printers and traditional workshop processes. She has a keen interest in sustainability across the Faculty, leading a team to achieve Bronze Green Impact Award 2025, as well as improving wellbeing provisions for staff and students, leading the Faculty Wellbeing working group and as Secretary to the EDI Committee.
Previously, Amabel worked as a model maker for a number of internationally renowned architectural firms in London, including Foster & Partners, RSHP and Allies and Morrissons. Her work focused on precision making in wood and plastics, adapting and interpreting Architectural drawings to be realized in 3D space. She was the winner of the New Blades ‘Best of Show’ Award 2017 and has had her modelmaking work displayed in the RA Summer Exhibition 2023. Amabel undertook a PGCE from the University of Buckingham whilst working in a secondary school, teaching both Art and Design Technology classes to students ages 11-18. She feeds these learned pedagogical practices and importance of building strong relationships with students into her role within the Fabrication Laboratory.
In her free time, Amabel enjoys pursuing other making techniques across disciplines including green wood working, sewing, upholstery and willow weaving.
