ResearchTopic: Chinese life style vs. Urbanization

In last 30 years, the urbanization rate in China has increased from 19.6% in 1980 to 42.2% in 2007. People’s residence form has experienced a dramatically change from self-built cottages, apartments allocated by company, early commercial apartments to modern gated communities.

In recent years, modern gated communities have become a dominated residence form. Although seemly well designed, they are isolated, anonymous and inconvenient in some ways, which changes Chinese traditional life styles and neighbourhoods.

My research is based on a small city in East China called Zhuji, Zhejiang Province. It aims to investigate what people’s real life style is in a small city and what kind of space do they need for daily things such as buying vegetables, hanging duvet, playing mahjong.
