Jamie has 6 years experience working as an urban designer across the UK. Before embarking on his PhD, he worked at URBED (urbanism, environment and design) for 5 years in Manchester. This work comprised of a mixture of public and private sector clients and the projects ranged from baseline assessments and design guides to masterplanning and community based design.


Flourishing in Outdoor Neighbourhood Space

The PhD focuses on the role of outdoor neighbourhood space in supporting positive enduring mental health (Flourishing). The research is collaborative and is supervised jointly by the department of Architecture and the Cambridge Wellbeing Institute at the department of Psychiatry.
Jamie is also an avid photographer, concentrating on positive urbanism and, more specifically, people-environment interactions.  His personal website ( explores good urban design with photos, a simple rating system and en emphasis on the science of wellbeing (both personal and social).  The site provides references to the strongest evidence emerging in these areas.
