Abstract
The global challenges of climate change, public health and urban economic competitiveness have highlighted the need for analytical tools that link city design to sustainable mobility. This presentation introduces the Urban Network Analysis (UNA) framework - a modeling approach for examining land-use and transportation interactions at the pedestrian scale. The UNA framework enables planners, designers, and policymakers to assess and enhance walkability and bikeability by simulating how land-use configurations and infrastructure investments influence pedestrians' or cyclists' movement. By integrating spatial design and behavioral insights, such analyses can guide urban interventions that promote sustainable mobility, reduce carbon emissions, and improve urban livability.
Professor Andres Sevtsuk is Head of the City Design and Development Group at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, where he also leads the City Form Lab. His research is focused on the influence of urban form on sustainable travel behavior and on public qualities of built environments - urban ground floors, main streets, and amenity location patterns. Andres’ Urban Network Analysis framework and software tools are used by researchers and practitioners around the world.
