Dr Felipe Hernandez

This paper discusses the work of a philanthropic organisation in Cali, Colombia, Fundación Carvajal. It examines the impact that this organisation has had on the urban fabric of the city, while situating their work in the broader context of contemporary philanthropy. I will argue that philanthropic organisations play a key role in contemporary urban development, not only providing services, and changing public perception of peripheral areas, but also transforming patterns of territorial occupation and land values, thus influencing city growth. I will also argue that this philanthropic organisation has been less effective in changing the social fabric of the city. On the contrary, though successful in transforming the physical fabric, their interventions tend to ratify existing socio-economic structures.
