Research Assistant/Associate in Urban Systems and Infrastructure Management x 2 (Fixed Term)

Two vacancies exist for Research Assistants / Associates in the Ove Arup Foundation Programme for Digital Cities for Change (DC2) in the Department of Engineering.

The Research Assistants / Associates will play a key role in establishing the progamme. They will identify how data and digital tools are impacting the mechanics of policy, governance and management of a city and infrastructure planning and design in practice. In particular, the research aims to uncover the relationship between the operation and management of infrastructure systems and the city-level outcomes for the citizens and economy. This will be done through both literature review and primary data collection in the form of interviews with local authorities, city agencies, industry practitioners, and researchers. It will involve mapping the actors in the city, the governance and management structures, the issues they are trying to address as well as the information and data streams they have available or need to access. The research will identify types of modelling and data analysis techniques and tools that will help in improving our understanding of how infrastructure systems deliver services that enhance the performance of cities.

Further details of the research to be addressed over the two years will emerge from this initial scoping activity.

The key responsibilities and duties are: - Mapping the role of data in city government and infrastructure management activities: Plan and manage primary and secondary research on data collection, management, and curation across all actors involved in city management and infrastructure design, planning, and operation. - Identifying scope and gaps in research across different fields: Identify challenges and issues in current data collection, modelling, management, usage, and curation activities and identify relevant current academic research gaps and industry needs. - Outlining professional competency framework requirements: Use findings of initial research and examine similar professional competency frameworks in other fields. - Developing further research in identified areas
