Venice
Studio 1 has worked in Venice from the beginning of the year. From an early field trip we have sought to consider and represent the complex and particular urban topography of the City. Venice, as we have explored, is a city that disorientates. The experience of navigating through the City’s fabric heightens our senses and disturbs the familiar ease that we have with everyday urban structure. Our investigations into the nature of particular and general spatiality of Venice were exhibited to the school in a gallery installation designed by the studio. The implications of otherness - and the exhibiting of fragments - were picked up in Stones of Venice. The project proposed a visiting exhibition at the Hayward Gallery of pieces displaced from Venice.
Many of the ludic and disorientating qualities of the city were then examined in site strategies developed around a theme of bodily disability and therapy, working with two blocks in the City – both at the extremity of the island, between the City and the lagoon. Students defined their own mixed-use programme over the year as a reworking of the urban block defined by each site.
Working with the extraordinary typological stability of the Venetian apartment block and with the ongoing tradition of adaptation, rather than building afresh (the business of establishing firm footings being so involved), we have sought to remodel the urban blocks that form our sites to respond to contemporary needs. Many of the programmes provide for adaptable dwellings and workspaces, local amenities and spaces associated with the constant reforming of Venice itself. The work seeks to mediate, like the early mappings, between a conceptual notion of the city and the immediate and unique physical environment.
