Conservation of traditional building construction (through an understanding of its history)

The Plasterer

The Traditional Building Construction Research Group seeks to undertake projects that inform the conservation of buildings.

It seeks to do so primarily through promoting the research of how materials were successfully used in the past rather than for instance the use of scientific research into preservatives.

The Group aims to use archaeological techniques to record existing structures coupled with documentary analysis to help distinguish the layers of construction that have developed over time. Scientific techniques for dating are used where appropriate to help in this endeavour. The primary objective however is to increase our knowledge or the past, how good building can be best preserved and what we can learn from it for the future.

We welcome suggestions for projects in this area and PhD applications.
