Environmental Costs of Aviation (Schäfer)

Principal Investigator: Dr. Andreas Schäfer (Architecture)

Researcher: Mr. Zia Wadud (Architecture)

Air transport impacts both the local and global environment. Many studies have tried to estimate the environmental costs to society of air travel. However, no study to date has summarised the existing literature with regard to methods, underlying assumptions and results on a systematic basis. Given the lack of a careful and systematic study, policy-makers do not have a full view of the current evidence base related to proposing certain regulatory or market-based instruments. Having robust estimates of the environmental costs of these impacts is critical if effective measures are to be implemented. This one-year project is being funded by OMEGA, a partnership of UK universities funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England's (HEFCE) Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF 3). This study is undertaken in conjunction with the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
