An online series of conversations during 15 October – 3 December 2020 Online global workshop on 28 January 2021 Hosted by the Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies, University of Cambridge

Greetings from the AUM team – hope you all have weathered the pandemic safe and well.

In the AUM calendar, the Year 2020 is a symposium year.  As you may have already gathered, the on-going COVID uncertainties have made it impossible to welcome you to Cambridge this year.  Instead, the AUM team has decided to adapt the symposium into a series of online conversations among leading scholars and practitioners under the theme of ‘Modelling the New Urban World’.  Since the COVID-19 pandemic is only one of a multitude of underlying triggers for change, the AUM2020 conversations are by no means restricted to the newness arising post-pandemic – we would be interested in discussing all fundamental drivers for change in the coming decades.

Please see the online working programme for the events – the dates are all Thursdays between 15 Oct and 3 December, and Monday 26 Oct (we may still add more Mondays during this period).

Once registered for the series, you will be able to access the online symposium ‘room’ at each session for both the talks and some social interaction among the AUM community: the core session will be for two hours of talks and Q&A, and the symposium ‘room’ will be open for informal chat both before and after the core session.  To minimise no-shows etc, we plan to introduce a paid online pass at £20 for the registration.  The registration fees will contribute to a AUM prize fund for young scholars – and for any reason if you are unable to pay the fee, but would still be committed to coming to AUM2020, you could contact and as from Mrs Marta Presz, our Martin Centre Research Secretary (researchoffice researchoffice@aha.cam.ac.uk) for a free pass.

The timing of the core sessions is mostly 3-5pm UK time to maximise the coverage of the world’s time-zones.  Occasionally, we may change to an earlier or later time to suit the specific topic, speakers and audience – in such cases we’ll warn you in good time.   The main talks and Q&A will be recorded for the registered attendees to watch afterwards, and we will not record the informal pre- and post-session chats.

In addition to the online conversations in October-December, we would like to organise a one-day session of presentations on Thursday 28 January 2021 as a finale to this series of online sessions.  To enable the presentations to connect with the conversation topics, the deadline for submitting a 500-word abstract will be 18 December 2020.  Of course you’re welcome to submit presentations on modelling the new urban world that are not connected with the conservation topics.  Following the AUM tradition, there is no need to submit the full presentation for review, although for ensuring smooth online delivery, we would request that you send us the full presentation pdf on 21 January 2021.  This year, we also plan to award the best presentations by postdocs and research students with AUM prizes.

The AUM2020 online pass registration is open. In line with University of Cambridge policy we require all participants to give their consent for use of photographs, video/film and sound recordings taken for this event.

Full text of the consent form can be found here. You will be asked to agree to those terms and conditions during the registration process.
