1967-2007: Forty Years of Research
Research in the Department was first formally established when Professor Sir Leslie Martin set up the Land Use and Built Form Studies Centre – renamed The Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies – in 1967. The Martin Centre is the longest established architectural research centre in the UK, with an international reputation, recently being referred to as “the leading British architectural research unit” in the international research journal Architectural Science Review.

The last full academic year has seen excellent progress in research across the themes listed below, with a dozen new funded projects commencing. The largest of these address: lighting in libraries (AHRC); ventilation in health buildings (Dept. of Health); and sustainable design in China (EPSRC) and Africa (EU). Two particularly significant new projects were awarded and commence in 2007/2008: a five-year project on conflict in cities (ESRC) and a four-year project on sustainable urban environments (EPSRC). Furthermore, a major five-year EPSRC award on 'Energy Efficient Cities' has been announced and involves our collaboration with Computing and Engineering Departments in Cambridge.
